Document Database

You can store any type of document in a Coimbra database. Each document is stored in unaltered form in the database and is accompanied by a set of meta information which describes the content of the respective document. The Coimbra system is based on a client-server architecture. The server may be either a local disk, a mounted network drive or a webserver. The webserver is read via the http protocol and documents are written to the server via the ftp protocol.

For security reasons and in order to achieve increased efficiency each document in the database is stored as an encrypted and compressed file, together with a descriptor file which contains the description and some meta data on the file.

One of the key benefits of Coimbra is the possibility to shift a database from one medium to another without much effort. Coimbra allows to develop any material locally on the disk and then move the entire database to a Web server.
